Annie Soga and Tim Nicholas make zines under the name STUDIUM/punctum . The main zine that they write together is Shelf Life: Adventures in Used Book Hunting, currently on its second issue, with a third in the works. Each issue centers on a city, town, or region, with NYC being broken up across several issues. They currently have 12 future issues planned.
About four years ago, having already been dating for a year, They started going to used bookstores together. What began as a hobby quickly turned into an obsession and after attending the 2013 Brooklyn Zine Fest they made it their goal to put out some zines and get a table at the fest the following year.
Each issue is sprinkled with mini book reviews, commenting on favorite finds. Sometimes this is just a matter of saying "look at this cool thing I found!" But just as often this format provides them space to write essays on a whole range of topics, from photography to utopianism to alternative education. Through writing about book buying, they discovered, they could write about everything that's important to them.
